ABSTRACT
Validation of a colorimetric method for silicates in sugar and sugarcane juice
The colorimetric method for reactive silicates (silicates A) and total silicates in sugar and cane juices was validated. The limits of detection (LD) and quantification (LQ), the intermediate precision, the bias evaluated as percentage error of the recovery and the expanded relative uncertainty were determined. For silicates A in refined sugar, the LD and LQ were 1 mg SiO2/kg and 3 mg SiO2/kg, respectively. The expanded uncertainty was 5% and 9% for silicates A and total silicates, respectively. In cane juice, the expanded uncertainty for silicates A was 23% and for total silicates 27%. The total silicates in sugar determined with the colorimetric method were compared with values determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. There were no statistically significant differences between results obtained by the two methods. However, the colorimetric method has lower LD and LQ, which makes better suited for determination of silicates in sugar, without the need for expensive equipment and materials.
